Fertiliser isn’t just about promoting growth, it’s also about nurturing a patch that can withstand the trials of nature and time. A sturdy lawn is your first line of defence against pests, diseases, and environmental stresses. According to the experts at The Lawn Squad, coffee isn’t just a morning must-have for humans, it’s also an “essential” for lawns.
They explained: “Nitrogen-rich coffee grounds can be sprinkled on the lawn or mixed with water (about half a pound of coffee grounds to five gallons of water) to create a nutrient-packed lawn tonic”. The lawn experts at Turf Technologies concurred: “Not only can coffee revitalise us in the morning, it can also revitalise our lawns.
“For us, it’s the caffeine that does the magic. For your lawn, it’s the minerals coffee contains – nitrogen and phosphorus – that does the magic.” It’s not the caffeine that stimulates healthy grass growth, but rather the nitrogen, phosphorus and trace minerals that coffee grounds contain, reports the Express.
There are numerous benefits to using coffee grounds on your lawn, one of which being unlike synthetic fertiliser, where incorrect application can have disastrous effects like burning the lawn or contaminating water via runoff, “coffee grounds have no such adverse effects”.
They’re also slow-release fertilisers, contrasting most synthetic offerings. The experts said: “This allows your lawn to benefit from the nutrients for a longer period of time, ensuring greener, thicker and stronger turf for longer.” Moreover, worms have a real taste for coffee grounds. They feast on these grounds, and, in exchange, aerate the lawn with their waste, which separates the soil (aerates) and further encourages lawn growth.
One foolproof way to apply coffee grounds to lawns is to just sprinkle them around, letting them settle where they may. The humble earthworms will get to work breaking them down or they’ll eventually disperse once you mow your lawn. Ensure to rake or sweep it lightly so no large piles are left on the grass.
You can also use a bucket with holes punched through the bottom or a spreader to scatter the grounds evenly. Keep reapplying this homemade lawn fertiliser every month or two to encourage a thick, green turf.
