A man told his wife he got a raise at work so he could treat her to a sudden vacation – but now he feels bad about lying over where the money actually came from
A person who won big on a bet told his loved ones he made the money through a raise at work.
But the hidden bet has left the Reddit user feeling guilty and wondering whether to come clean. Treating his wife to a vacation with the funds, the forum user explained his good fortune but wanted to come clean about how he made the cash. He told his wife a work raise was the reason for the sudden trip, but the “good vibes” of the holiday are at risk.
Taking to r/confessions on the social media forum, the user has since detailed their trouble and sought advice from members.
He wrote: “I won a nice chunk in a sportsbet on Stake recently and decided to treat my wife with some gifts and plan a vacation ahead. Problem is, I lied to her and said I got a raise at work to explain where the money came from. At the time, it seemed like a harmless white lie to keep things simple and surprise her without any questions.
“But now, I’m realising that after I spend this money, she’s going to notice that I’m having less money and the lie will come out. I didn’t think this through, and I’m starting to feel really guilty about it. I thought the lie would just smooth things over, but it’s starting to weigh on me.
“I’m worried about how she’ll react when she finds out the truth. I don’t want her to feel like she can’t trust me, and I don’t want this to ruin the good vibes from the gifts and the vacation.”
One user suggested lying again, writing: “It was a work bonus, not a raise. You misspoke out of happiness and jubilation.” Another wrote: “if you’re planning on stopping sports betting, then a one time lie like ‘it was a work bonus’ or something is fine. but knowing people who sports bet, you’re probably going back to it soon, so it’s better for you to come clean and just tell her where the money came from.”
