A council flower bed has come under speculation after locals spotted two cannabis plants growing amongst the floral display. Experts say the class-B drug may have occurred due to ‘bird poo’
Locals were left in stitches after cannabis plants were unexpectedly discovered in council-managed flower beds.
Yesterday (July 15) shocked residents spotted two unusual looking plants with palm-like leafs growing next to a floral display across from a Co-Op supermarket store. Plant recognition technology later identified the mystery shrubs as ‘kush’, aka marijuana.
The flower beds, located on Anglesea Street, Ryde, in the Isle of Wight, are managed by Ryde Town Council. However, they were first planted by charity Haylands Farm, who claim there are two possibilities as to how the weed got there – including bird poo spreading the illicit drug around.
“We looked it up and it said it was Kush, a cannabis variety,” a spokesperson for the nonprofit – which helps those living with learning difficulties – said. ‘It will be taken out and it certainly isn’t something we would grow here.”
The spokesperson speculated: “It has probably been put in by a local or came from a bird poop.” As bizarre as the sentiment sounds, it’s not the first time birds have spread the class B drug around the country. Back in 2015, dad Darren Turner was left gobsmacked after discovering cannabis growing amongst his petunias, which were thought to have grown from bird poo.

Residents quickly found the funny side to the mystery drug appearance, with one person branding the story ‘brilliant’. “That’s the funniest thing I’ve seen all week,” added another.
A third said: “No need to remove them. They will be gone by the morning,” while a fourth quipped: “How many people are walking around town right now?”
Ryde Town Council has been approached for comment.
