Rishi Sunak’s address to Labour MPs following the State Opening of Parliament yesterday (Wednesday, July 17) are doing the rounds on social media – and everyone is saying the same thing
People are all saying the same thing about Rishi Sunak following his witty remarks in Parliament yesterday (Wednesday, July 17).
The interim Conservative Party leader gave his first official speech as Leader of the Opposition yesterday following the State Opening of Parliament.
Sunak used the opportunity to “offer some words of advice” to the Labour MPs sitting opposite him, telling them “life comes at you fast” on the government benches. He said: “Soon you might be fortunate enough to be tapped on the shoulder and offered a junior ministerial role.
“Then, you’ll find yourself attending cabinet. Then, in the cabinet.” And in a nod to the chaotic circumstances that led to him becoming Prime Minister, Sunak added: “And then when the Prime Minister’s position becomes untenable, you might end up being called to the highest office. And before you know it, you have a bright future behind you.”
MPs could be heard cracking up at Sunak’s self-deprecation. The former Prime Minister added at the end: “And you are left wondering whether you can credibly be an elder statesman at the age of 44.”
The clip has since been shared wildly on social media, with people seemingly all saying the same thing about Sunak – that he suddenly seems likeable now he is no longer in charge. One comment on TikTok read: “I like this new Sunak.”
Another person asked: “Why is it that MPs become more personable and candid when they’re out of power? The burden of high office obviously drives some of the more negative human personality traits.”
“Why wasn’t he this honest while in the role,” a third wrote. And a fourth TikTok commenter said: “Don’t know why people are shocked, Rishi has always been a good guy, he just inherited an impossible position.”
