A man left his girlfriend fuming when he refused to take her to a Michelin-star restaurant after taking his sister to the same place – and his excuse just made things worse
Sometimes, you need to know that your partner is ‘the one’ before you drop a small fortune on getting them a gift.
We all want to show our significant others how much they mean to us, and while that’s most often done through actions and words, we occasionally might want to get them a gift. Be it a bouquet of flowers or their favourite chocolates, buying a present for your partner just because isn’t unusual – but it isn’t supposed to break the bank.
One woman was left furious when she asked her partner to take her to a fancy restaurant for dinner and he refused, with a simple five-word excuse that stopped her in her tracks.
In a post on Reddit, the 22-year-old man said he had recently taken his older sister for dinner at a Michelin-star restaurant around 50 miles from his home to celebrate her birthday. When he returned, he told his girlfriend about the experience and showed her some pictures, and she asked him when he was planning on taking her.
But the man shut her down with a simple five-word response: “We haven’t dated long enough.”
He explained: “She seemed a bit sad after that and changed the topic, and I felt a bit guilty. Was I the a**hole? I love my girlfriend, but taking someone to a Michelin-star restaurant would mean they are really special to me, and that we will always have a bond forever, and I don’t think I am there yet with my girlfriend.”
The man added that he has been in a relationship with his girlfriend for “almost a year”, and silenced commenters who thought there were cracks in their romance by stating that “so far, everything has been going great”.
Most commenters could see his point of view, but many told him that he should have been more “tactful” with his approach. They recommended telling his girlfriend that he would consider going to the restaurant to celebrate a special occasion such as an anniversary, as this would give time for their relationship to develop.
However, others said he was thinking too deeply about the dining experience. One person said: “First date I can sort of understand but a year is crazy. You’re the a**hole, you should be taking her out somewhere better.”
Another added: “You just told her she’s not important enough for an expensive meal,” while a third stated: “Attending a Michelin restaurant with someone means ‘a bond forever’? Really? Dude, it’s a list of restaurants made by a tyre manufacturer. They give stars to taco stands and street food now. It’s not deserving of the pedestal you place it on.”
