A ‘trespasser of an unusual nature’ has been removed from a UK train after they were found moving ‘at pace’ through a carriage – but not everyone is happy about the decision

A “trespasser of an unusual nature” has been removed from a train, sparking calls for the “rebel” to be given free travel.

Network Rail Wessex announced they had located Solomon the escaped tortoise on a train and escorted him from a train at Ascot. The incident on Friday (July 19) saw the animal removed by two men in hi-vis jackets.

The operator confirmed the tortoise was taken off a train bound for Bagshot. The network stated: “On Friday (19 July), there was a trespasser of an unusual nature on the tracks at Ascot as an escaped tortoise called Solomon was moving ‘at pace’ (according to the incident report) towards Bagshot.”

“Network Rail teams arranged for the next train heading into Ascot from Aldershot to stop shortly to allow the tortoise to be rescued, getting the shellebrity onto the train to bring it into the station.”

However, social media users have since called for the creature to be allowed to ride for free, despite it moving “at pace” through one of the carriages.

Solomon has since been collected by their owner. Despite the efficient response of Network Rail teams and their apology to passengers, members of the public are calling for “rebel” Solomon to be granted free travel.

One user joked: “That must have been very stressful for the tortoise. He looks shellshocked.” Another added: “Probably got where he was going quicker if he’d had walked.”

A third quipped: “Oh come on, they couldn’t at least let him watch a race or two before sending him home? He must have shelled out an arm and a leg to get to Ascot (and set off the week before)! “.

Some had a laugh suggesting Solomon was trying to skip his rail fare, with comments like “free Solomon” popping up. One person cheekily remarked: “Look at Solomon the rebel tortoise not paying his train fare.” Meanwhile, another questioned the owner’s capability, saying: “If your tortoise escaped I’m not sure you’re ready to have a pet.”
