Intrepid traveller Kylie has warned UK passport holders to do the ‘maths’ as they may have to renew the document long before the expiry date
A travel blogger has shared a warning for UK passport holders heading on holidays, urging them to check their document details.
Kylie, also known as England & Everywhere on TikTok, warned upcoming travellers to double check the expiry date on their passports, especially if you still have a ‘red’ one.
Describing it as “passport maths”, Kylie explained there’s a way to check if your passport is still in date and valid for travel. She said: “My passport here expires in June 2026, so technically I’ve got two years left on my passport, right? No I have not.
“So my passport was actually first made in September 2015, which then means that it runs out in September 2025, so that’s only like a year away, not two. But then from there, if we do some maths September 2025, from there some countries make you have three months left – as in before your expiry date.
“That would make my passport running out in June 2025. Some countries, like if you go long haul, want you to have six months left, which then means my passport runs out in March 2025, even though in the actual book it says June 2026.
“So that’s like a year and a half before the expiry date listed in my passport, so I’m going to be renewing my passport at the end of this year because I want to travel in March next year when this is close to actually expiring.”
Kylie said she’d be renewing her passport in November of this year, where she explained, “in theory I have two years left”. She continued: “Make sure you do the maths, the expiry date is 10 years from the day it was first made, not the expiry date in here, the laws changed so it’s now different.”
To help out, Citizens Advice has shared details for those travelling with a UK passport. The following information is relevant to those travelling from the UK.
If you plan on travelling to the EU, Norway, Switzerland, Iceland or Lichtenstein, the first thing you need to do is check the latest travel advice on the Gov.uk website for specific details about each country.
When it comes to checking if your passport is valid for travel, Citizens Advice warn that Brits should renew the document if there’s less than three months left on your passport at any time while you’re travelling, or if your is 10 years old or more on the day you enter the EU country – count this from the date your passport was issued.
If you’re worried about your expiring when you plan on going on holiday, the best thing to do is apply for your passport as early as you can. It’s also possible to renew via the one week Fast Track service on Gov.uk.
