For many, the 9-5 is just a means to an end. But one woman confessed that her boyfriend’s job is a sore subject in their relationship – and it’s sparked a heated debate online.
This awkward situation surfaced earlier today when the 28-year-old admitted she needed some advice on this issue. Despite being in a serious relationship, she hadn’t disclosed the reality of her boyfriend’s job to her parents, fearing they might not take it well.
Posting anonymously to Reddit, she said: ” My boyfriend (m28) makes a living through sports betting, and while he’s successful and responsible with his finances, I haven’t told my parents the full truth about his job.
“[…] They’re pretty old-fashioned and might not understand or approve of his career choice.” As of now, her parents think this boyfriend has a “more traditional career”, though she didn’t reveal what that was.
And although they’ve seemingly bought her lies, the truth behind it all is starting to play on her conscience. “I’m torn between wanting to be honest with them and avoiding potential drama,” she continued.
“It’s been weighing on me, and I’m not sure what to do. Has anyone else been in a similar situation where they had to reveal something sensitive about their partner to their family? How did it go, and what did you do to prepare for the conversation?”
The anonymous confession has since garnered plenty of attention online, but various users are in two-minds about the dilemma. One in particular didn’t hold back, writing: “Yeah I mean I wouldn’t want my daughter to tell me she’s dating an unemployed gambler either.”
Another also added: “It’s boggling my mind that you think sports betting is being financially responsible. It’s a risk. It’s always a risk. You yourself should be wary about his ‘career’.”
But others defended her boyfriend, with one writing: “Just tell them he’s a professional gambler, they’ll either be impressed or appalled. But either way, it’s his choice and as long as he’s responsible and successful, that’s all that matters!”
