An American admitted she was “taken aback” by a culture shock she noticed while visiting London in the UK – but thankfully, it hasn’t put her off the city

Americans living in the UK often share thoughts about their experience with the culture change online. Whether it’s the ‘grocery store’ that seems different or just the lack of eye contact Brits (Londoners) make on the tube, there are definitely some differences.

One American living in the UK was asked what surprises her the most about Brits, in a street interview led by K Jordy, she was asked: “What is the biggest difference between the UK and US cultures?”

To which she replied: “I’d say the drinking culture. I was very taken aback by the amount of adults just like out and about at 5pm with a beer or a pint.”

She went on to explain that in the US people were a lot more longer hours so she doesn’t usually spot adults earlier in the day. She added that in terms of work culture, people in the UK are happier.

She said: “I would be really stoked if I could move here later in life – it’s much closer to the rest of the world, makes travelling way simpler.”

One person commented under the video: “It’s not as bad as it used to be. People in their teens and 20s drink a lot less than they used to. Non-alcoholic is more fashionable.”

Another explained: “Work finishes in offices mostly at 5pm then sociable visit to pub after with colleagues is very common.” And a third joked: “If she thinks British drinking culture is lit wait until she discovers France.”

Of course, alongside culture clashes though the countries share a common language, words and slang differ.

It’s not K Jordy’s only video to go viral in recent weeks. Earlier this year, the American man living in London listed the five British words that “don’t sit right” with him – so much so that he jokingly called for them to be made “illegal”.
