After discovering her old Furby two decades after last playing it, a curious woman ‘woke it up’ with new batteries in a bid to see whether her toy still wanted to play
Furbys were all the rage in the late 1990s – a must have for boys and girls alike following their release ahead of the festive season in 1998.
Resembling a furry owl-type creature, the battery operated robotic toy responded to human voice, learning words and phrases and issuing demands to be fed or tickled. But like all kids’ fads, their popularity eventually faded into obscurity and they were sent away to the attic or the big charity shop in the sky.
One British woman, however, has brought her Furby back to life two decades on after rediscovering it in her home. The toy was in no mood for play though – and it let her know as much.
She shared a video of it to Reddit, which she captioned: “I found my old Furby and after two decades of sleep, it immediately goes to sleep when you wake it up. Honestly, I get it Furby.” The clip sees the toy declare “me sleep again” before snoring in its position on a bookshelf.
“He needs batteries!” one Reddit user declared, prompting the woman to explain: “He was given fresh batteries but this is the best he can do.”
Others were quick to recall their own Furby experiences, the majority saying their toys of yesteryear left them in fear. “Mine used to be stored under my bed, but about two or three times a year I would get woken up by this exact phrase in the middle of the night – scared the s*** out of me, so I relocated him to the attic,” one person said. “I’m fairly certain my mum has since chucked it out, which makes me a bit sad.”
And another reminisced: “I got a Furby toy from McDonalds once and it randomly switched on in the small hours of the morning, terrifying me.” A third quipped: “Still the stuff of nightmares.”
Elsewhere, a fourth Redditor offered advice to the original poster on how to resurrect her toy properly should she wish. “That is called me sleep again,” he explained. “You need to wait for your Furby to fall back asleep then put your finger in its mouth. Turn it upside down and shake it.”
