Prince William, Prince of Wales and Queen Camilla have been in regular phone contact in recent weeks following King Charles’ cancer diagnosis – and old tensions appear to have eased

Prince William and Queen Camilla have become closer since King Charles’ cancer diagnosis, an expert has claimed.

Old tensions have eased between the royal pair in recent weeks following regular telephone conversations in recent weeks, it is reported.

Photographs showed Prince of Wales, 41, and the Queen Consort, 76, as they walked shoulder to shoulder at the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey this month. However, the monarch’s apparent determination to slim down the number of working royals has put an even greater burden on William and Camilla, according to experts.

One told The Sunday Times that Camilla will undertake three engagements this week. On Thursday, in what is her most high-profile public engagement on Charles’s behalf, the Queen will attend a service at Worcester Cathedral to mark Maundy Thursday, where she will distribute Maundy gifts to pensioners and people selected for their community service, a ceremony which dates back to 1210 in the reign of King John.

An aide said: “From the Prince of Wales’s perspective, he has looked to balance his private life supporting his family and his public life quite successfully for the last couple of months, and he will continue to do so.” He is expected not to be in attendance at Worcester Cathedral because it is believed he will spend the next three weeks with Kate, Princess of Wales, and their children; George, 10, eight-year-old Charlotte, and Louis, five. William will then return to royal duties after the Easter break, it is understood.

A friend of the Waleses said: “Undoubtedly what has happened to him in his life [with his mother] has led him into the protection mode he is in now.” An aide added: “All he wants to do is protect his wife and children. The family just want to go away for Easter, spend time together, the five of them, close off from the world and move on.”

When Charles and Kate were both at The London Clinic at the same time in January following different surgeries, royal onlookers noted the pair’s special bond. Charles visited his daughter-in-law in the private hospital.

A source close to King Charles told The Sunday Times: “The King has always had a close, warm and unique relationship with the princess. She has a great love and respect for him and his position.

“When they were in hospital together there was a lot of toddling down the corridor to spend time with her. He has been encouraging and supporting her throughout.”
