There are several road closures set to take place over August. The variety of closures will see roads closed for set amounts of time up and down the capital.
Some of these are due to essential works being carried out by National Highways and Thames Water. One closure will also be related to HS2 works, which will be the first new intercity railway built north of London in over a century.

A4 Great West Road
From Monday, August 5 until Tuesday, August 13, the A4 Great West Road will be closed from 10pm until 5pm every night between Chiswick Roundabout and the junction with Ealing Road.
TFL says its best to plan your journey ahead and note that signed diversions will be in place due to the National Highways works.
Lille Road/Old Brompton Road
Lille Road/Old Brompton Road will be closed in both directions until Sunday, August 18. The road will be closed between the Seagrave Road and Eardley Crescent junctions. The road is closed for Thames Water works.
Whitehall
Up until Wednesday, August 28, Whitehall will have two separate closures that will take place – Monday to Friday between 8am and 6pm, and then on Saturdays between 8am and 1pm.
The works will start on the southbound carriageway from the junction with Trafalgar Square and once work there is done it will move northbound from Wednesday, August 14 from the junction with Great Scotland Yard.
Farringdon Street
Farringdon Street will be closed due to major gas main replacement work for the whole of August, until September 2024. The road is closed northbound between Ludgate Circus and Charterhouse Street.
Traffic will be diverted via Fleet Street, Fetter Lane, New Fetter Lane, Holborn Circus and Charterhouse Street. TFL says that if you need to travel through the area, be aware there will be long queues and delays, especially on the diversion route. Some bus routes will also be impacted.
A12 Colchester Road
There will be directional lane restrictions on the A12 Colchester Road, between the junction with the M25 and the junction with Woodstock Avenue until late September. TFL suggests allowing more time when travelling during this period.
A10 Kingsland High Street
There will be works taking place on the A10 Kingsland High Street at the junction of Sandringham Road. Lane closures will be in place on Q10 Kingsland High Street until Saturday, July 28 and Sandringham Road will be closed until Sunday, August 31.
Rowley Lane flyover, Barnet
The A1 Barnet Bypass at the junction with Rowley Lane will see a series of closures until mid-October. There will be overnight directional closures between 9pm and 5am. There will also be lane closures constantly reducing the A1 from three lanes to two.
However, on Monday, September 9 and Wednesday, October 10, there will be a lane out in both directions.
Grosvenor Road and Lupus Street
Until mid-October 2024, Grosvenor Road will be closed eastbound between Royal Hospital Road and Lupus Street. Lupus Street will be fully closed during this time.
Delays can be expected on all approaches to Grosvenor Road, particularly during peak traffic times. There will also be bus diversions for routes 24 and 360.
A40 Westway
Until Thursday, August 22, the eastbound off-slip and the southbound A3220 West Cross route from the Westway roundabout will be closed. Drivers will not be able to exit the A40 to join the A3220 West Cross route travelling southbound, but the westbound on-slip and A3220 northbound will still be open.
It is expected that the A40 approach to Wood Lane will be very busy so use of alternative routes such as the A312 The Parkway or the A406 North Circular are encouraged for connections with the A4.
HS2 A40 works
The A40 Western Avenue will be reduced to two lanes in both directions, between Hanger Lane and Alperton Lane, until late October. There will also be some additional overnight lane restrictions and directional closures at times.
A24 Balham High Road/Upper Tooting Road
There will be a series of lane restrictions and temporary traffic signals in place on the A24 Balham High Road/Upper Tooting, between the junction with Ravenstone Street and the junction with Blackshaw Road, until July 2025. This is due to Thames Water Works.
