Becky Hill performs at her album launch party in London
Becky Hill isn’t just another TV singer off The Voice.
She’s anything but that – she’s in a league of her own and is undoubtedly one of the UK’s most incredible and unique live performers. The Mirror was invited to celebrate the 30-year-old’s new album Believe Me Now? at London’s famous nightclub, Heaven.
Her tracks are no stranger to the charts, with notable big-name collabs on songs with artists including Sigala and Jonas Blue – plus her number 1 hit Gecko (Overdrive) with Oliver Heldens back in 2014. But Believe Me Now? is different, it’s raw and revolutionary.
“We are here to celebrate all things album, but actually I thought we’d just have a bit of a camp set for the night,” she told the crowd at Wednesday night’s bash. She began the night belting my favourite, and first, track on the album True Colours. The lyrics are deep and follow a first-hand experience of a sexual assault by somebody you trust and your friends not believing you. Becky says it’s not about “being a victim”, it’s an “uplifting anthem”.
And uplift it did, cementing my previous live performer statement, Hill’s perfect, unmatched vocals echoed around the historic venue. “I didn’t want it to be emotional and I didn’t want it to be angry – I’ve had years of therapy to examine that anger and not allow it to inform me, who I am,” she said of True Colours previously in a release statement.
Becky’s party on Wednesday wasn’t just another concert, it was special – she constantly reminded the crowd of superfans how grateful she was for each and every one of them. Asking for a show of hands, she asked who had actually bought Believe Me Now? There wasn’t a single hand down and some points throughout the night, Becky looked emotional.
“Guys, I can’t thank you enough for listening to the album and for being here tonight.” As well as showing off the new stuff, she also included some of the OGs, including Afterglow – a tune she isn’t even named on. “I hadn’t been signed my first record deal yet, I hadn’t put out any music yet and this song was coming out and I didn’t put my name on it,” she said.
“I was super gassed to be apart of this artist’s career and it has been 11 years since that song was released and it’s become a bit of a cult classic,” Becky said of the tune released by British record producer Wilkinson in October 2013. “Are you ready for the Afterglow?”
If you didn’t need any more evidence that Becky was one of the best artists born out of a competition television show, she flaunted her endless talent some more during the night’s acapella session, silencing everyone with a raw and ready performance of Swim.
“I love throwing out the set list decisions to the crowd! Especially when you can hear a pin drop in between them singing along,” she explained on Instagram on Wednesday night. “These album shows have been the most engaging and caring audiences and the cherry on top was @heavenlgbtclub last night for a full out and out camp evening of partying!
“Huge thank u to @jodieharsh @i.jordan @rileasa for the special appearances and my on stage beauties @lady.noelia @teelee and @sachasavorysings,” she continued, sharing a clip from the unforgettable night filled with music queen Becky Hill’s unmistaken music.
