Moving away from the hustle and bustle of Scotland’s main cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh, visitors have an abundance of choice from a seemingly endless list of villages, towns and lochs – with the majestic Glencoe Lochan being one of them

With the warmer temperatures and long sunny days now upon us it’s the perfect time of year to visit Scotland and see what this beautiful country has to offer.

Luckily for people who already live there, and for people coming to visit, there is plenty to see and do. As you move away from the activity of the larger cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh, you are spoilt for choice with an endless list of quaint villages and towns to tour, each with its own unique quality. The awesome landscape of Glencoe Lochan is no different. Already a popular location for hikers, with its rugged terrain and imposing hills, it’s a great choice for any fitness-minde Brits who prefer to keep things active during their getaways. The area is an enormous patch of woodland in an idyllic setting. It’s just north of the village of Glencoe.

The forest itself was created by Lord Strathcona. He developed it to stop his Canadian wife being homesick, and it’s often likened to a miniature Lake Louise in British Columbia. The loch sits in the centre of the wood and is surrounded by majestic conifers and rugged mountains. There are several trails running through the ornamental woodland at the foot of the loch.

The area’s beauty is no secret, so expect to find it busy with other tourists coming to revel in its majesty. It’s worth bearing in mind that an early arrival is the best idea as parking can be difficult. Benches surround the loch-side, as do picnic tables and pontoons, meaning there are plenty of places to chill out and grab a spot of lunch after your hike.

TripAdvisor is packed with visitors detailing their glowing experiences about the area and its bewildering beauty. One visitor said: “Parking can be difficult at the car park as it gets very busy. We walked around it at least five times during our recent stay and saw it in all weathers, always beautiful. There are three walks, red is shortest, blue and yellow a good deal longer and more strenuous. The loch is popular with dog walkers, must have said hello to dozens of lovely 4 legged friends! It’s to be recommended.”

Another fan of the loch left a five-star review, saying: “What a beautiful spot. Three trails to choose from, we started on the woodland trail and came back on the lochan trail. A few other people around but not so busy as to lose the sense of tranquillity.”
