A cleaning expert says she’s solved the problem of smeared windows and all it takes is two products you may already have in your kitchen to get them sparkling clean

A cleaning hack hailed as ‘the best ever’ for achieving perfectly clear windows can also be used on shower screens, mirrors, tiles and anything with a shiny surface.

Cleaning windows can be a laborious and time consuming task but one of the most rewarding afterwards. That’s if you’ve managed to remove all the smudges that are often left behind from wiping the glass panes. There’s nothing more annoying than putting all your effort into a chore only to sit down ready to admire your hard work and spot a load of annoying smears streaked all across the windows. There are costly products on the market, all claiming to solve the problem but one cleaning fan says you don’t need to spend your dosh on any of those.

In fact she says there are only two basic items required which cost just a few pounds, although you probably have them under your kitchen sink already. Libby shared her hack on her TikTok page @thecleanupcompany and revealed that she simply uses a microfibre cloth and a dash of Fairy Washing Up Liquid to make her windows the envy of the neighbourhood. Demonstrating her trick on one of the windows in her home which has a couple of marks on it, Libby calls it “the best cleaning hack ever”. She explains that you don’t need window cleaner, just a dampened microfibre cloth with a little Fairy on it.

She then “mushes” the liquid into the cloth – no cups are required – and rubs the window with it to remove any dirt. Straight afterwards she takes a dry cloth to buff the window, which is left sparkling and smear free. “Look at the results. Like, how fast does that work?” she says in her video before revealing where else around the home it can be utilised. “You can also use this hack for your bathroom, shower screens, mirrors, shiny glossy tiles, and anything with a shiny surface.”

Libby also admitted she got the hack “from two Scottish ladies” and will never use window cleaner again because it’s so “incredible”. The tip, which originally came from ?theweeScottycleaners went down a storm with her followers. One tried it out at home and agreed it worked a treat: “Stuck in the house without window cleaner… Did this amazing,” they wrote. Another had tried and tested the method before: “I have been using this hack for a few months. It’s absolutely fab,” they said. A bottle of Fairy Original Washing Up Liquid is available from Tesco for £2. The supermarket also sells a four pack of own brand microfibre cloths for £1.80, which works out at 45p each.
