For anyone looking to visit as many countries as possible, a city break in this European destination is perfect as it allows you to hop across three borders in a matter of seconds

There is a European city that straddles three different countries, and locals commute to and from work by floating down a river.

Basel in Switzerland is a unique city in that it is nestled at the junction of the Swiss, French and German borders – with its suburbs extending into both France and Germany.

Travel influencer @emsbudgettravel took a trip to Basel earlier this year and shared her experience in a recent TikTok video. She showed her followers that there is a tripoint where all three of these borders intersect, allowing you to visit all three countries within the space of about 10 seconds.

But Basel isn’t just about its unique location. According to Em, the city is also “one of Switzerland’s cultural hubs”.

The “mediaeval Old Town” and “cobblestone streets” were particular highlights for her, as was “Switzerland’s biggest carnival” – the Carnival of Basel – which usually takes place in February or March.

Basel also serves as a great “base” for visiting neighbouring cities and locations, Em added. Moreover, despite Switzerland’s reputation as one of the priciest countries in the world, she managed to visit Basel “on a budget”. Em spent just £149 on flights, accommodation, food, transport and other expenses over four days.

And if you thought Basel’s location was quirky, wait until you hear how some locals get around – by floating down the Rhine river!

If you visit while it is warm enough, you’ll see scores of people bobbing down the river in the morning or afternoon, as many use it as a relaxing way to commute to and from work.

Shops even sell special waterproof bags to put your belongings in if you want to give this a try!
