Parts of London are being hit by a thunderstorm while other areas continue to bask in glorious sunshine on Monday afternoon (May 12). The Met Office issued a 10-hour thunderstorm warning running until 10pm tonight and some areas are already being battered by the sudden change in weather conditions.

The yellow weather warning is deemed to have a ‘very low likelihood and a medium impact’, which tallies up with only small pockets of London currently experiencing the storm. On social media there have been posts about the storm focusing around North East London in areas including Tower Hamlets and Islington.

One post on X reads: “Super loud Thunder coming over London right now.” While another from X user @cmpd_date at 5.11pm said: “As well as the power failure on London Underground, there is a massive thunderstorm incoming above Greater London. Sky goes from Clear Blue to Black as the Ace of Spades instantly. Flashy Flashy Bang Bang time.” The Tube power failure is in reference to the ongoing issues on Monday evening linked to a National Grid fault.

As part of the Met Office thunderstorm yellow warning a spokesperson said: “Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop on Monday afternoon. Whilst these will be fairly fast-moving, rain may be intense for short periods of time and produce 20-30 mm in less than an hour, with 40-50mm within 1-2 hours in one or two places where thunderstorms grow larger.

“Lightning, hail and gusty winds will be additional hazards. Showers and thunderstorms will ease through the evening.”
