It’s the most frustrating thing to buy new plants – which can be quite expensive – and then watch them die without knowing what to do – do you water them more or less?
Have you ever overwatered your plants and then found water-logged roots? Or have you not watered them enough and watched your plants dry out beyond rescue?
It’s the most frustrating thing to buy new plants – which can be quite expensive – and then watch them die without knowing what to do. However, one quick-witted dad from TikTok has shared a hack which will tell you if your plants need watering.
A TikTok user named Samantha Rose shared her top tips for knowing when to water outdoor plants. She learned this easy trick from her dad.
The usual trick to check if your plants need watering is to check the soil for wetness or dryness or to look at the leaves but Samantha’s does something different. The TikTokker’s secret is to check the pot, especially for hanging plants; you don’t have to worry about mess when doing this.
Samantha showed us in a video: “My dad taught me one of the best garden hacks. This is going to save you a lot of time, and a lot of plant’s lives.
According to Samantha and her dad, you have to be a little more active when checking the state of your plants, Samantha said: “The best way to tell if your plant needs water? Just kick the pot.”
In her video, it doesn’t move after she kicks the pot it doesn’t move, which she interprets as the plant not needing any more water She said: “If it doesn’t move, it doesn’t need water. If it moves, it needs water.”
This clever gardening tip got over 81,000 likes from people online who thought it was smart. One person said: “‘Not going to lie as a professional horticulturist, I walk around the greenhouses doing this all day and tipping hanging baskets.”
Someone else wrote: “Thank your dad for everything”, and another person said: “If it works it works.” But some people on TikTok weren’t sure about the tip and made jokes. One person teased: “‘Hmm I tried it and it broke what does that mean? Does it need more water?”
Another person said: “So I just bully my plants to see if they’re thirsty.”
Another person who was unconvinced by how the gardening tip could work pointed out that there could be different results based on the material of the plant pot, they said: “I mean this might work on plastic pots but larger actual terra-cotta pots they won’t move if you kick them in there empty.”
