Man stabbed multiple times as ‘group fight with knives’ in Islington street

A man in his 20s was left fighting for his life after being stabbed multiple times in Islington on Saturday morning (May 17). A group of armed men were seen fighting each other on Watkinson Road at around 3.45am, leading concerned onlookers to phone the police.

Upon arrival, officers found a severely injured man with knife wounds to his chest and back. He was taken to a major trauma centre after being treated by multiple paramedics and London’s air ambulance.

He is no longer in a life-threatening condition, according to a statement issued by the Metropolitan Police this evening (Tuesday, May 20). The force also confirmed no one has been arrested in connection with the fight as of yet.

A large cordon was set up around Watkinson Road, the adjacent Pipers Close and Caledonian Road Tube station. Forensics teams remained on scene until Saturday evening.

Detectives are now appealing to the public to help with their ongoing investigation. They are looking to speak to anyone who saw the attack or knows information related to it.

‘Group of men fighting with knives’

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “Police are appealing for witnesses following a serious assault on Saturday, May 17. Officers were called at 3:45am to Watkinson Road following reports of a group of men fighting with knives.

“Officers arrived and located a man with stab wounds to his chest and back. The victim, a male in his 20s, was taken to hospital where he received treatment for his injuries – His condition is no longer considered life threatening.

“A large scene was in place until the evening of May 17 while forensic examination took place. No arrests have yet been made and the investigation is ongoing.”

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 3.54am on Saturday, May 17 to reports of an incident in Watkinson Road, Islington. We sent resources including ambulance crews, a paramedic in a response car, an incident response officer and London’s air ambulance.
