A woman got the shock of her life when her dying dad made an unexpected confession before passing away from old age – and it changed her perspective on her entire life
A woman’s entire world was flipped upside down when her dad made a deathbed confession that ‘destroyed everything she knew about her life’. Sharing the story on her mum’s behalf, her daughter explained how her grandfather was suffering with dementia before passing away from old age.
Due to this, he started to reveal ‘secrets’ about his past that he’d kept under wraps for decades. Responding to Reddit’s ‘Which is the most haunting death bed confession you know of?’ thread, she said: “My grandfather, who had dementia, told my mother that she had a brother. She ignored it (because she is like that) until my cousin did a 23andMe and we found out that my grandmother had a baby when she was 18 and gave it up for adoption.”
It turns out her brother had been searching for blood relatives for a good while – and so she decided to make contact with him to finally put his search to an end.
And thankfully, all the skeletons in the family closet were able to be put to rest. While it was a big surprise initially, they have finally been able to reconnect with the brother that was put up for adoption.
The Redditor added: “It was a shock to my mum and her sister because my grandmother was a super straight-laced Catholic woman but they have met their brother a couple of times.”
In response to the candid post, many chimed in with their own experiences. One commenter said: “I’m Irish and have four known cases involving five children that were given up in my family, within my grandparents generation.”
A second wrote: “Recently found out my stepmum gave a kid up for adoption, but she also had my step-sister out of wedlock. Her family wanted my dad to annul his marriage to my mum, which I don’t even think he could do, because divorce wasn’t Catholic.”
While another user shared their own discovery about their grandfather, saying: “He revealed that my mother was not his only child. In the 1950s, when his long time best friend was unable to impregnate his wife, my grandfather spent a week in a remote cabin in the Ozarks having sex with this guy’s wife in order to give them a child.
“He said they had sex over 20 times. His friend even walked in on them once having sex on the kitchen counter after he drove down for the day to check on them – no phone at the cabin. Well, the week of sex worked and she got pregnant.
“The couple then moved out of state to start a new life as a family – to this day it is their only child and she’s not aware of her biological dad.
“The only communication my grandfather received from them afterward was a letter giving confirmation the child was born a healthy little girl. He never saw his friend again, but stated he often thought about that cabin in the woods.”
