Meghan Markle’s alleged need for control scuppered her chances of a Vogue front cover about her charity work, according to an insider. The well placed source claimed the Duchess of Sussex had been “blacklisted” from appearing in the publication by the formidable Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of the iconic magazine since 1988, due to her team trying to “micromanage” a planned piece.

Most damning of all, Mail Online’s insister said Meghan’s “level of desire for detail and control on the media is almost like Beyoncé level… but she’s not Beyoncé”. Fashion queen Anna, 75, who is famously non-nonsense and an admitted demanding perfectionist when it comes to her work, was not amused.

If fashion sources are to be believed, the alleged fallout is even said to have caused the friendship between mum-of-two Meghan and Edward Enninful, the former editor of British Vogue, to cool. The drama is alleged to have happened back in 2022, when the coverage in the esteemed publication was said to have been planned to work alongside Meghan’s keynote appearances at the One Young World Summit in Manchester that September.

The 43-year-old wife of Prince Harry and her team are said to have insisted on vetting the words, and reportedly also pushed for the piece to be a front cover. Instead of having the desired effect, Anna is alleged to have grown frustrated and pulled and scrapped the feature altogether at the last minute.

“Anna heard about it and just like banned her and said: ‘That’s it. We don’t want to do this’,” said the source. “And so she didn’t get the cover, and I guess she didn’t even get the story.

“[Edward] probably agreed with Anna that you don’t get to call the shots on who’s on the cover. That’s absolutely an editor’s decision.”

Previous reports suggested Meghan wanted to be on the global cover of Vogue, meaning she would appear on the front covers of the US and UK versions at the same time. According to US publication Page Six: “Meghan asked for control over [the] photographer, writer, final edit, photos, cover lines, and wanted a global issue.”

British Vogue editor Edward, who already had supermodel Linda Evangelista booked for the September 2022 cover, was said to have been unswayed by his pal’s request for the front page spot. Anna, meanwhile, had lined up Meghan’s pal Serena Williams for the prestigious US Vogue front cover.

Adele is the only celebrity to have appeared on UK and US Vogue covers simultaneously to date, back in November 2021. Notoriously hard-to-please editor Wintour is said to be a huge fan of the charming singer, and after she appeared in the publication, she offered to style her for the subsequent Grammy Awards.
