The disgruntled child asked whether they were being unreasonable to shower for 15 minutes as they shared their parents have asked them to be a little more ‘considerate’ to the household – despite paying £100 a week

While most people will contribute towards bills when living with parents, it can be a little tricky when trying to balance being fair with how much hot water you use – especially if you’re sharing with your whole family.

One person has revealed their parents “moan” about their 15-minute daily showers, as they have been told to be a little more “considerate” as the rest of the family have to make “sacrifices” to not shower every day to keep bills down.

Now they’re stuck in a dilemma as they feel paying £100 a week is enough to shower for as long as they wish and ask if they should stand their ground and shower or accept it is a little selfish.

They explained how they work full time, as well as doing an online course and pay a £100 weekly contribution to their parents for living at home but are being “moaned at for spending 15 minutes a day in the shower.”

In an anonymous post to Mumsnet, the disgruntled child explained that one day they spent half an hour in the shower and accepted it was a long time – but was then asked to be “more considerate”, and has now reduced their daily shower to 15 minutes, but according to their parents this is still “too long”.

“Apparently it’s not necessary to be in there that long and the rest of the family make sacrifices and go without only showering every other day and using sink and flannel in between, I hate this,” the post detailed, and they added: “My parents don’t have a lot of money but they do have 4 children and my mum chooses to stay at home meaning she chooses that we make sacrifices.

“As the oldest, I’m the only one paying my way and don’t feel it’s unreasonable to shower for 15 minutes a day. I get my parents to choose not to so they can save money but I pay them a lot.” They then asked if they should stand their ground and shower away or wondered if 15 minutes was a little over the top for £100 a week.

People were quick to weigh in with their opinions as many people couldn’t understand why they took so long in the shower, one user asked: “15 minutes for a shower? That is way too long. What’s taking so long?” As another added: “I struggle to wait 3 mins for hair conditioner as I’m pretty much in and out in 2 mins.” While a third added: “Too long. There would be no hot water left in our boiler for anyone else if you were that long at my house. YABU.”
