Londoners can expect a mix of sunshine and showers this week, but a major heatwave is just around the corner. A new Netweather map forecasts temperatures could soar to 30-31C very soon.

After a warm spell with highs of around 26C last week, the capital is bracing for cooler temperatures and several days of rain starting tomorrow (Tuesday, June 3). BBC Weather predicts showers will begin at 9am and continue through to Sunday, June 8.

However, according to NetWeather, heat will return with force by Saturday, June 14. That day, temperatures are expected to hit 30-31C between 3pm and 6pm, after already reaching 25C by 9am.

The heat is likely to persist into Sunday, June 15, with a high of 29C before a brief dip early the following week. Forecasts show temperatures rising again to around 26-27C by Tuesday, June 17.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “Towards the middle of June, there is an increased chance that high pressure will become more dominant, at least in the south. This would result in some longer periods of drier weather, however, unsettled spells remain likely. Following a rather cool start to this period, there is a greater chance of warmer spells towards mid-June.”

According to PA, the Met Office has said it’s more than twice as likely that the UK will experience a hotter-than-usual summer, following the sunniest and driest spring in over 100 years. Their latest three-month outlook predicts a higher risk of heatwaves, with the likelihood of above-average temperatures 2.3 times higher than normal for June to August.

While not a guarantee of prolonged heat, forecasters say the increased chance reflects warmer days and nights typical of recent years. Rainfall and wind levels are expected to stay near average, and the pattern is consistent with a general warming climate.

The Met Office has also indicated that ‘hot spells’ may emerge later in the month, particularly in the south. A spokesperson said: “Changeable weather is most likely across the UK with a mixture of Atlantic weather systems moving in from the west interspersed with dry and sunny periods, perhaps with a bias towards longer dry spells early in the period. Temperatures are most likely to be near or slightly above normal, perhaps with some hot spells at times especially across the south.”
