Ella Purnell and Walton Goggins star in Amazon Prime’s live-action adaptation of the hit post-apocalyptic video game franchise

The live-action Fallout TV series is just around the corner, as the hugely popular post-apocalyptic franchise comes to Amazon. From Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy and video game publisher Bethesda, Fallout will follow a completely new and original story set in the world of the video games.

As per its official synopsis, the series will take place 200 years after the apocalypse, as the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters are forced to return to the irradiated hellscape their ancestors left behind – and are shocked to discover an incredibly complex, gleefully weird and highly violent universe waiting for them. Prime Video has billed Fallout as a “story of haves and have-nots in a world in which there’s almost nothing left to have”.

It boasts a stacked cast led by Ella Purnell as peaceful and idealistic Vault Dweller Lucy, whose nature is tested when she is forced to the surface to rescue her father – played by Twin Peaks’ Kyle MacLachlan. She stars alongside Walton Goggins as a bounty hunter known as The Ghoul and Aaron Moten as Maximus, a soldier in the militaristic Brotherhood of Steel

Co-executive producer Nolan – the brother of Oppenheimer filmmaker Christopher Nolan – also directs the opening three episodes and recently revealed he is a big fan of the franchise. Speaking at a press event as reported by T3, he said: “It started, for me, with Fallout 3, which devoured about a year of my life.

“I was an aspiring young writer at that point and it almost derailed my entire career. It’s so ludicrously playable and fun… seriously, the games were just incredible.”

He added that making the show solely for the fans would have been a “fool’s errand” and as a fan of the game is “very happy” with how the series has turned out.

“I think you have to come into this trying to make the show that you want to make and trusting that, as fans of the game, we would find the pieces that were essential to us and try to do the best version,” he said. “It’s kind of a fool’s errand to try to figure out how to make [other] people happy. You’ve got to make yourself happy and I’ve made myself very happy with the show.”

Amazon unveiled a new trailer for Fallout earlier in March, which also revealed the series will premiere sooner than previously announced. So to that end, here’s when Fallout is released and how to watch it absolutely free.

When Fallout is released on Amazon’s Prime Video and how to watch for free in the UK

Fallout will be available to watch on Prime Video from April 11, with all eight episodes dropping simultaneously. They will be available to stream with an Amazon Prime subscription, which usually costs £8.99 a month or £95 a year and comes with a host of benefits like next-day delivery, Amazon Music Prime, Deliveroo Plus and free delivery on HelloFresh orders for a year – while Prime Video alone can be joined for £5.99 a month.

But Fallout fans can sign up today and access all these great benefits free thanks to Prime’s 30-day free trial. This means loads of great films and shows – including The Boys, Invincible and Jake Gyllenhaal’s Road House – can be enjoyed without paying a penny.

Alternatively, a host of new shows are streaming on platforms like Disney+, including the all-new fantasy action-adventure Renegade Nell, the latest project from Happy Valley creator Sally Wainwright. The streamer from The House of Mouse is available to join from as little as £4.99 a month and includes mountains of films and shows from the likes of Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar and more.
