East London car chase ends after man ‘crashes into van’ on busy road at rush hour

A man was arrested with a weapon after ‘assaulting an officer’ following a high-speed chase saw that him smash into a van. Police arrested a 47-year-old at 8.15am this morning (Friday, June 6) after a chase began at the junction of Blackhorse Road and Courtenay Road, Walthamstow.

But the driver allegedly had other ideas and tried to make off, but was stopped after the crash. He was arrested for a number of suspected crimes, including theft of a motor vehicle, possession of an offensive weapon and attempted GBH after assaulting an officer.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “At 8.15am on Friday, June 6, police pursued a car at the junction of Blackhorse Road and Courtenay Road, Walthamstow, following an ANPR activation. The car stopped after colliding with a van on the road. No injuries were reported.

“The 47-year-old driver of the suspect car was arrested for several offences, including theft of a motor vehicle, possession of an offensive weapon and attempted GBH after assaulting an officer. He remains in custody for questioning.

“Enquiries are ongoing. Please call police on 101 with the reference 1462/6Jun if you were a witness or have any information which may help.”

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 8.28am today (June 6) to reports of a road traffic collision on Blackhorse Road, Walthamstow. We sent ambulance crews to the scene and treated a man before taking him to a major trauma centre as a priority.”
