Beach Boys singer Brian Wilson has died aged 82, his family said in a statement on his website, adding: “We are at a loss for words right now.”

Born Brian Douglas Wilson on June 20, 1942, in Inglewood, California, Wilson grew up in the city of Hawthorne with his two younger brothers, Dennis and Carl. In 1961, he co-founded the Beach Boys with his brothers, cousin Mike Love, and school friend Al Jardine. Together, they helped define the sound of the California surf scene and went on to achieve international fame.

Wilson served as the band’s primary songwriter, producer, and arranger, crafting a string of hits that included “California Girls,” “I Get Around,” “Help Me, Rhonda,” “God Only Knows,” and the groundbreaking “Good Vibrations.” His innovative use of studio techniques and complex vocal harmonies helped push the boundaries of what pop music could be.

He is survived by his children, including daughters Carnie and Wendy Wilson, who found success in the 1990s with the pop group Wilson Phillips.
