Some parts of the UK are geared up for soaring temperatures this weekend, including 27°C in London – setting the scene for a mini-heatwave that’s sure to see many youngsters splashing away in paddling pools. A symbol of classic British summertime, these paddling pools offer an inexpensive way to keep the kids entertained without any extra cost.
Yet, as we’re reminded by Alex Price, product manager at Outdoor Toys, there’s more to consider than just fun in the sun. He stressed: “Paddling pools are a fun way to cool off in the warmer weather, but it’s vital to ensure the water is safe for young children.”
It seems straight from the hose might not always be best, particularly for toddlers and babies who don’t take well to sudden temperature changes.
Price noted: “While filling the pool with cold water from the hose may seem tempting, it can be too cold for babies and toddlers, who are particularly sensitive to temperature changes.”
Chilly dips could lead to discomfort or worse, so Price outlines the perfect paddle conditions: “Cold water can lead to discomfort, chills, or even hypothermia if young children stay in it for too long. The ideal temperature for children’s paddling pools in the UK is generally considered to be between 29°C and 31°C.”
Worried your water’s too nippy? Price offers this tip: “A simple way to check the temperature is by using a bath thermometer. If it’s too cold, top up with warmer water or consider playing earlier in the day when temperatures are higher.”
Price also warned that parents should be constantly supervising their little ones during pool play to prevent any accidents, highlighting that even a shallow depth of just 2cm of water can result in a drowning hazard, reports the Express.
Once the splashing has stopped, it’s crucial to either cover or drain the pool, a move that not only safeguards your child but also helps to avert mishaps.
“Plus, a cover helps keep leaves and debris out, making your next swim even more enjoyable,” added Alex.
