A budget-savvy woman has come up with an unusual way to adapt your morning porridge by adding one simple ingredient, and others admit they can’t wait to try it for themselves
While most people might choose jam or honey to boost the taste of their porridge, one woman claims she has come up with a genius way to supercharge your morning meal, and it’ll only set you back 1p. Carla, who shares budget-friendly food hacks on TikTok, shared details of her bizarre concoction in a video. With a box of Yorkshire Tea at the ready, she said: “If you love tea and you’ve not tried putting your tea bag in your porridge, you really must try it.”
With a world of flavoured teas available, Carla confessed her weakness for Yorkshire Tea’s caramelised biscuit tea bags for the unusual hack in particular. “These are my ultimate favourite, but you can use any tea bag,” she shared. Carla then broke down her simple recipe, adding porridge oats to a bowl, followed by the tea bag, sweetener, and water “to allow the tea bag to brew.”
She continued: “You then just microwave this for two to three minutes and the tea will kind of exude itself into your porridge.”
Post-heating, Carla threw in some chopped strawberries and whey powder for an extra protein kick – keeping it plain to avoid overpowering the tea flavour – followed by a sprinkle of soya crispies and pistachios.
The only downside? “Obviously the gross bit is removing the tea bag,” she quipped.
However, Carla went on to enthuse: “I really recommend this though – it’s like a way of getting a double-dose of caffeine in the morning. I’m imagining coffee lovers could do the same thing with coffee in their porridge, but think of all the possibilities here.”
Carla concluded her culinary exploration with suggestions for Earl Grey or English Breakfast tea-infused porridge, musing: “Has anyone tried peppermint tea porridge? Would that work? Is that a different vibe? Green tea porridge perhaps?”
In just four days, Carla’s innovative breakfast idea captivated over 200,000 TikTok viewers, sparking a flurry of comments.
One TikTok user penned in response: “Tea-infused porridge? Brilliant idea! How about trying a matcha porridge next?”
Another shared: “I love these tea bags so will try this! I recommend the Tesco vanilla chai ones too.” To which Carla replied: “I’ve never tried chai and would be nervous to waste a whole box. I need to find someone who has it and ‘borrow’ it!”
A third person shared their experience: “Coffee porridge is so underrated, add instant coffee to the oats and it’s 10/10.”
