The blood-red carpet was rolled out in the Odeon Luxe in Leicester Square on Wednesday night (June 18) with fans and guests crowding to see the A-listers. Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle teamed up with Oscar-winning writer Alex Garland to create ’28 Days Later’, a gory sequel to ’28 Years Later’.
The movie is in cinemas from today (June 20) for the public to head out and enjoy. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world and it has been almost three decades since the rage virus has escaped a biological weapon laboratory.
Mainland residents are infected but a small community have found a way to exist off the coast of Northumbria. 12-year old survivor, Spike (Alfie Williams) learns that there might be someone beyond the safe island to help his mother so he risks everything to find them. Spike escapes the island on a mission to the mainland while discovering secrets and horrors that have engulfed the infected and the survivors.
At the premier, Boyle told The Hollywood Reporter: “Our ambition was to try and make as an original a film as the first one when it came out … The upgrades on the infected are a privilege to film and witness … I think people will enjoy the upgrades.”
Following this, Comer shared her views on the movie by telling The Hollywood Reporter: “It’s horror, but I was struck by how moved I was … The script felt so rich and also really at the centre of it is this family dynamic, this relationship between mother and son, which is not your usual relationship.”
Due to this movie being a sequel, Sony Pictures film boss, Tony Rothman admitted to Variety that going back to the franchise after such a long break was a “risk” but that risk is something that comes with being in this industry.
Rothman added: “My high school coach told me a long time ago: no balls, no glory. if there’s no risk, there’s no fun. You have to take risks. You’ve never been able to be in the movie business without taking risks.”
This movie is part of a trilogy with the third sequel being Nia DaCosta’s ’28 Years Later: the Bone Temple’. This is set to be released in 2026 and it will see a reprise of Cillian Murphy’s role of Jim who was a survivor of the original outbreak.
