Transport for London is urging Tube passengers to carry water with them this weekend as temperatures look to soar beyond 32C. The advice comes as the capital continues to sizzle both above and under ground, with highs in the late 20s seen daily since Monday (June 16).
Last year, the Victoria line was named the hottest of the London Underground network as platforms are often scorching between June and October. As such, people are encouraged to be sensible and not travel if feeling unwell.
It may also be a good idea to retime journeys to a less busy time. Trains speeds may be also reduced as was the case during the 2022 heatwave when the Met Office issued its first ever red warning amid record heats.
Hot temperatures can affect rails, overhead power lines and signalling equipment, causing delays and cancellations across the city. Thankfully, TfL has previously said it has response teams available to deal with any subsequent issues.
It will be impossible to avoid a sweatier journey than usual, sadly, as the majority of lines still do not have air conditioning. The transport authority has attempted to cool things down a bit via larger ventilation shafts, better fans and mechanical chillers at the busiest stations.
However, as most Londoners will know, some stations and trains remain almost unbearable during the summer.
Find out below how to enjoy the coolest route possible:
Which Tube lines have air conditioning?
Only a handful of Tube lines have air conditioning. These include:
- Circle
- Hammersmith & City
- District
- Metropolitan
The following public transport services also have cooling technology:
- Overground
- Trams
- Elizabeth line
The good news is more air conditioning is on the way, with the Piccadilly line set to be cooler than ever thanks to a £2.9 billion upgrade. This new fleet will replace the existing 86 trains and is expected to be in use by the end of 2025.
TfL is also trying to acquire Government funding to install new trains on the Bakerloo line by 2030. These would feature air conditioning and real-time information, and be quicker than the current stock.
