A major grass fire in Enfield shut a section of the M25 this evening (June 24), with drivers experiencing tailbacks to Waltham Abbey. Lanes one and two of the motorway were closed anticlockwise between junctions 25 and 26 due to the blaze on the adjacent Mollison Avenue.

Around seven hectares of shrubland and grassland was completely destroyed, according to a statement issued by the London Fire Brigade. 70 firefighters and ten engines, as well as a wildfire response vehicle, were on scene since for two and a half hours, finally getting the flames under control just after 6pm

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

This is the third fire on Mollison Avenue in the last few days, following a similar grass fire on Sunday afternoon (June 22). Today’s fire was much larger, engulfing eight and a half more hectares of grassland and requiring 30 additional firefighters.

However, another blaze earlier on Sunday morning destroyed a two-storey warehouse and caused the roof to collapse.
