London will see more scorching temperatures in the weeks and months over Summer to come, according to a weather expert who has spoken to MyLondon. Jim Dales of the British Weather Services (BWS) exclusively said that although we’ve seen sweltering heat during May and June – London experienced six days of temperatures crossing the 30C barrier in June which is well above average – there is still “plenty of time for 30C plus temperatures” to continue as the end of July and start of August tends to be the capital’s hottest period.

Mr Dales also explained London tends to see the highest temperatures across the UK map because it is an ‘urban heat island’. He’s not the only one forecasting more crazily hot weather, as online forecaster Netweather predicts mid-July to exceed the 30C mark – reaching 31C on July 15 – with the Met Office and BBC Weather predicting today (Tuesday, July 1) to reach a roasting 34C.

He added that recent heatwave conditions in the capital and other parts of continental Europe is ‘global warming without a shadow of a doubt’.

“London is becoming more of a Mediterranean summer situation,” he said. “We should be very concerned, we can expect more droughts, heat records, and floods. We have to change our safety attitudes to cater to the adverse effects of global warming.

“We need to start constructing lighter buildings, [and start] thinking like the Southern Mediterranean, even with what we eat.”
