Woman’s house treated like charity shop after trying to do selfless gesture

A woman wanted to make a difference by donating unwanted items for free but couldn’t believe the response she got after assembling an assortment of furniture and other products for people to take

A woman who tried to complete a generous gesture suddenly found her home being treated like a charity shop.

Many people choose to donate their unwanted items – be it clothing, books, furniture and more – to charity shops to help people get decent goods for less, while supporting a worthy cause.

Others choose to donate to their local community, visiting groups on social media to advertise their products for free to those who need or want them. One woman is a regular poster in multiple local “buy nothing” groups online, where all listed items don’t cost anything and just require the new owner to collect them.

Recently though, she discovered many people who seem desperate for an item then simply don’t show up to collect it. In frustration, she decided to pack everything up and leave it outside her home and advertise it for people to take as they please.

One “entitled” person’s response left her stunned, though. On Reddit, she explained: “I frequently post stuff [for] free in our local buy nothing groups.

“Between my household and my grandma’s, we have a lot of stuff. Most people just don’t show up after holding it since they ‘need it so bad’.

“Annoyed with holding stuff for months, I decided to place it all outside. I took a photo and said, ‘all the stuff people never showed to pick up. (Listed some items). No holds. Pick up on (X Street in X Town) Don’t take the table’.”

She then explained the table was filled with items, with more products – including “furniture, AC unit” and more – placed under and around the table. There were so many products, as well as bulky items, that the rest had to be laid out on the kerb.

The woman explained: “Someone asked me, ‘is that all or are you adding more?’ I told her, ‘this is all [the stuff] people never picked up. I won’t be adding more’.

“She said, ‘that’s disappointing, can you add more or allow us to walk through your house and pick out more’.”

In shock, the woman continued: “I’M SORRY who do you think you are… My house isn’t a free Goodwill to walk up in and take whatever you want. Yes she is older, so the entitlement does not surprise me. Just the audacity to ask that is jaw-dropping.”

In the comments section, fellow Reddit users shared their thoughts and experiences – and it seems many have come face to face with entitled people after freebies.

One person said: “Wow! The nerve!” Another joked: “Surprised she didn’t ask if she could have your house as well.”

A third shared: “Oh man! Our first garage sale we had everything set to go in the garage, sale starts at 8. 6.30 in the morning! While my husband and I are asleep in bed! There is scratching and rapping at [our] bedroom window!

“The window is two feet from our bed, and someone is peeking through a gap in the curtains and can see my husband’s head two feet from them. They [were] trying to wake us up so we [would] let them into the garage early to go through our stuff.”

Someone else added: “Our area has a communal garage sale every summer. I tried selling stuff every year and now I just leave it out in the driveway with a free sign. Easier.”
