The BMW Z3 may be a somewhat forgotten classic, but this used car expert believes it’s a great second-hand buy. It won over enthusiasts with its retro-inspired design, smooth engines and grip

A renowned second-hand car dealer has taken to YouTube to endorse an older yet stylish used sports car that can be readily found for less than £2,000. Matt Goodwin, who operates the YouTube channel High Peak Autos, frequently posts videos showcasing his latest acquisitions and offering advice to viewers on how to secure a dependable used car.

In a viral video, Matt test drives a BMW Z3 in Bermuda, acknowledging that while the model is somewhat outdated, it remains strikingly attractive. He elaborated: “Styling wise, I think it’s a very pretty car – I think it’s aged beautifully.

“There was a period, about 10 to 12 years ago, these were just languishing in the classifieds. They looked a bit dated but, all of a sudden, they’re having their time all over again.

“It looks like a genuine, bonified classic. When the Z3 came out, the styling was a little bit retro, which some people didn’t like but I always did. Now, I think nearly 30 years later, it is growing old gracefully.”

Produced between 1995 and 2002, the BMW Z3 was a two-seater sports car that succeeded the ill-fated Z1 as the German firm’s rival to the Mazda MX-5 and MGF, reports the Express.

Upon its release, the compact BMW received some criticism for its harsh suspension, but quickly won over enthusiasts with its retro-inspired design, smooth engines and grip.

While the Z3 was available as a hardtop coupe, it’s the convertible Roadsters that dominate the second-hand market, with entry-level models starting at around £1,500 and pristine, low-mileage examples fetching between £3,000 to £5,000.

Matt extolled the virtues of the BMW Z3’s bodywork and highlighted its impressively constructed interior, noting that many units come loaded with features.

He remarked: “The interior is nicely retro too. Everything is within easy reach, everything feels good quality. This particular car is a 1999 and yet everything still works.

“There isn’t a single piece of trim that’s loose or rattling, and that’s a real testament to their build quality. “Even though the design is nearly three decades old, it still feels like a modern car.

“You get a good quality leather interior, although some did come with cloth, electric seats, electric mirrors, electric windows and a power hood.”

Hitting the road, the YouTuber commended the BMW’s driving dynamics but advised those seeking a true performance vehicle to consider the more robust 2.8-litre engine variant.

He elaborated: “It’s a fun car to drive and be in, this. The steering is about perfect, the gearchanges are short, slick and precise, so it’s good to work through the gears and it handles beautifully. I mean, the speed limit here is 35kph (22mph), so I can’t really test it but, at speeds above that, it does well.

“If you want your BMW Z3 to me fun and fast, I’d recommend going for a six-cylinder. Something like the 2.8 straight-six is a gem of an engine that also comes with a limited slip diff.”
