A woman in her seventies was hit by a car on one of Hackney’s busiest roads during rush hour yesterday morning (July 1). She was struck on Lower Clapton Road just before 8.40am, with paramedics later rushing her to a major trauma centre.

Her injuries are neither life-changing nor life-threatening, according to a statement issued by the Metropolitan Police. The force also confirmed the collision is not being treated as suspicious.

The driver, who was uninjured, will not be subject to an investigation. A cordon was in place for multiple hours between the junctions of Median Road and Urswick Road but reopened at around 2.30pm.

Traffic was heavy and slow moving as a result, with congestion reported towards Homerton High Street and down to Hackney Downs. A number of bus routes were also on diversion, including the 38 to Clapton Pond and the 106 to Finsbury Park.

Later the same day, a man was killed in a collision just 10 minutes away from Clapton. Paramedics were called to Balls Pond Road, in Dalston, at 2.30pm but nothing could be done to save him.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “Around 09:00hrs on Tuesday, 1 July, officers attended Lower Clapton Road, Homerton, alongside the London Ambulance Service, following a collision involving a car and a pedestrian. The pedestrian, a woman aged in her 70s, was taken to hospital, where her injuries were declared non-life-changing and non-life-threatening.

“The driver was not injured. The circumstances of the crash are not being treated as suspicious.”

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 8.40am today (1 July) to reports of a road traffic collision on Lower Clapton Road, Hackney. We sent ambulance crews to the scene and treated a patient before taking them to a major trauma centre.”
