Are you a ‘thumb inserter’, a ‘biter’ or a ‘head smasher’? A leading psychologist reveals what kind of personality you have based on how you open your chocolate egg this Easter…

Turns out, how we tuck into our beloved Easter eggs this weekend can reveal a lot about our personality.

It is estimated that Brits will eat a whopping 80 million chocolate eggs this Easter – a tradition loosely based on medieval times where chicken eggs were gifted to the church after Lent. Despite soaring costs from the likes of Cadbury and Lindt, many of us refuse to give up our annual chocolatey feast.

Of course, even for the biggest of chocolate lovers, eating an entire Easter egg in one giant bite is a little weird (in fact, it’s completely unhinged). So, how do you crack yours open and what does it say about you?

New research has found there are five main ways of cracking open an Easter egg – the most popular being ‘thumb inserters’. This is where you gently push your thumb in the middle of the egg until it pierces through (quelle surprise).

The second most popular way is to bang the egg against a table, followed by those who like to take a giant bite to break the chocolate shell. Then, there are ‘top firsts’ who try and take the top part of the egg off before working their way down. And lastly, there are the ‘head crackers’ – which hopefully needs no explanation.

Jo Hemmings, a leading behavioural psychologist, was commissioned by Iceland Foods to explain what these methods say about you. When it comes to ‘thumb inserters’, the expert says you’re more likely to be a ‘thoughtful, organised person, with a sense of logic’.

“It means you’re patient and determined, and you make a loyal friend and partner who always shows understanding and empathy,” she added. “Almost a third of us are ‘Table Smashers’ and these people tend to be the ultimate party animals, a bit reckless in life and the ultimate party animal.”

Hemmings states table smashers like to take risks, are highly energetic and can sometimes be impatient. “Your friends can have trouble keeping up with you!” she said. “There simply isn’t enough time in your day to get everything done, so you like a shortcut or two.”

When it comes to biters, Hemmings say these people ‘like a bit of a challenge, especially when you are not stepping too far out of your comfort zone’. The expert explained: “You’re a thorough and dependable person who tends to be well-liked. You’ll be the one who organises your group of friends to get together as you are a sociable people person.”

Only 14 per cent of respondents claimed to be ‘top first crackers’ and Hemmings say these people are generally ‘calm and considered’. “They’re ambitious and determined, sometimes putting work before play,” she added.

And of course, we then have the bizarre ‘Head Crackers’ who are undoubtedly the most unpredictable kind of people. Hemmings says this unusual method lends itself to ‘creative’ people who love an adrenaline rush. “Their pleasure comes as much from the determination to break the egg on their head as it does for picking up the pieces to actually eat them!” she explained.
