Police are appealing for any victims of a now-convicted rapist to come forward. Bernard Williams, 77, who also goes by ‘Papa B’ is serving nine years after found guilty of one count of rape and two counts of sexual assault.

A victim reported Williams in January 2021 claiming she’d been raped at home having gone to William’s Brixton shop, ‘Original Products’ on Market Row, to buy a recommended spiritual treatment after becoming unwell.

Rapist Williams convinced the victim there was a spirit inside of her which would eventually kill her, convinced her of his ‘healing capabilities’ over the next few months.

She bought a guard ring and healing bath from Williams, and her mum’s house was ‘cleaned of spirits’, which cost the victim and her family over £13,000. However this didn’t work, and Williams insisted sex would remove the demons.

On January 12 2021, Williams turned up to the victim’s home uninvited to ‘anoint’ her where he then raped and sexually assaulted her. He shockingly stayed in touch with her, and eventually said the process hadn’t worked and that the spirit was still within her.

Williams had run the shop for 30 years and cops suspect his community-elder status may well have been abused elsewhere with other potential victims as he has also visited the homes of other shoppers.

‘Williams’ offending is shocking’

Detective Inspector Tom Palme said: “Williams’ offending is shocking. He abused the trust of the victim, which was built on the respect he had gained within the community, to get close to them and commit the offences.

“I would like to commend the victim on her strength throughout the investigation and thank her for her support throughout the court processes.

“Every woman deserves to feel safe and the Met is dedicated to tackling violence against women and girls by hunting down predatory men.

“We are concerned given the number of clients ‘Papa B’ may have assisted, his position the community for 30 years and his distinctive methods, there may be further victim-survivors who have not yet come forward.

“I would encourage anyone affected to get in contact with us if you feel able – you will be listened to and receive specialist support and guidance, not only from the police but independent charities and services.”

If you’ve been sexually assaulted it’s important to remember that it was not your fault. Sexual violence is a crime, no matter who commits it or where it happens. Don’t be afraid to get help.

If you have been a victim of sexual assault or rape or you have information about an offender, you can contact police on 101 or 999 in an emergency – there are specially trained officers who will listen and investigate where needed.

Further information, including details of agencies and charities that can offer support can be found on the Met Police website.
