Mobile alert issued in Spain after earthquake rocks tourist area

Part of Spain has been hit by a potentially damaging earthquake on Monday morning, with the impact felt across 50 towns. The magnitude 5.5 earthquake was felt at 7am – strong enough to potentially damage buildings.

The earthquake hit the Axarquía region in southern Spain – home to Malaga – and was felt in Velez-Malaga and Torre del Mar. It was also felt in Granada, Jaén, Murcia, Alicante, Albacete and Almeria.

Authorities say the earthquake was 6.2 miles below ground level and 13.2 miles from San José in Andalusia, Almeria. The fishing village is in the centre of Parque Natural de Cabo de Gata.

One tourist in Agua Amarga Almeria told Spanish newspaper El País said there “was an incredible roar”. She said: “I was sleeping, and the whole house shook for a few seconds There was an incredible roar. It woke up my entire family and the neighbours in the complex.”

One person living in Almeria said “the whole house shook”. One tourist said: “It lasted a few seconds, the whole hotel room was shaking.” Aftershocks of between 1.9 and 3.4 magnitude have been felt since the initial quake.

A mobile alert was reportedly sent to residents in Almería and Granada.
