A South London Labour councillor has been suspended from the party after he was charged with multiple sex offences. Irfan Mohammed, 42, appeared at Croydon Magistrates Court on Monday (July 14) where he was refused bail ahead of an appearance at Inner London Crown Court next month. He faces three accusations, including one count of sexual assault and one of exposure.
Court documents seen by MyLondon show Mr Mohammed is accused of sexual assaulting a female over 16 in the borough of Southwark between June 2024 and July 2025. He also faces an allegation of intentionally exposing his genitals to cause alarm or distress in Southwark in July this year, and one count of coercive and controlling behaviour between June 2024 and July 2025.
According to his LinkedIn profile, the qualified lawyer from East Dulwich, was first elected as a Ferndale ward councillor in 2018. After he re-election for Clapham Park in 2022, he served as Deputy Cabinet Member for Inclusive Economy before this week’s suspension. He is now listed as an independent on the Lambeth Council website.
Mr Mohammed’s previous work history includes directing a butcher business for eight years, and serving as a board member for a housing association and a local business initiative. He completed his law training at City St George’s University of London between 2019 and 2023, having studied business at London Metropolitan University in the early 2000s.
A Lambeth Council spokesperson said: “Following notification to the council from the police of an arrest and subsequent criminal charges, Councillor Irfan Mohammed has been removed from his position as a Deputy Cabinet Member and all council committees, pending resolution of the allegations against him.
“His membership of Lambeth Labour Group has also been suspended. We are unable to make further comment due to the ongoing criminal investigation.”
‘Fast-paced investigation’
A Met Police spokesperson said: “Three men have been charged with a series of offences following a fast-paced investigation by detectives from the Central South Public Protection team.
“The charges relate to an incident on Saturday, July 12. Officers were called to [an address in Southwark] at 1:22pm to reports of an alleged assault on a woman. She was not taken to hospital. Police attended and arrested three men at the scene.”
Kaymren Mohammed, 38, was charged with three counts of assault by beating and one count of controlling and coercive behaviour in an intimate family relationship, while Zairab Mohammed, 72, was also charged with coercive and controlling behaviour in an intimate family relationship, police say.
Irfan and Kaymren Mohammed appeared in court on Monday, while Zairab appeared in court on Tuesday. All three defendants are due to appear in custody at Inner London Crown Court on August 11.
