South London motorists are being alerted as a section of the busy A23 is expected to face chronic delays from August onwards while Transport for London (TfL) carries out works to make it safer for cyclists and pedestrians. Streatham Hill is to undergo work to make new pedestrian crossings, a protected cycling route as well as improvements to pavements and bus lanes.
Work begins on Monday, August 4, when there will be a series of lane restrictions in both directions on the major A-road between the junction with Holmewood Road on Brixton Hill and the junction with Sternhold Avenue on Streatham Hill. To safely install traffic management, the road will also be closed between Christchurch Road and Sternhold Avenue from 10pm to 5am on Sunday, August 3 into Monday, August 4, while engineers install traffic management.
Buses will run on their normal routes but may be diverted during the odd overnight closure. Some bus stops may be moved or suspended but this will be made clear at affected stops. The road’s makeover will last until autumn, and will see the central reservation moved, however it won’t be fully finished until 2027.
The commitment to minimise crashes in the area stem from the latest collision figures for the area which shows that 72 collisions took place in the three-year period up to October 31 last year, which left 75 people injured. Despite the disruptions to locals, TfL says it has planned its construction programme to minimise inconvenience.
Cllr Rezina Chowdhury, Lambeth Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Sustainable Lambeth and Clean Air said: “We welcome this important investment in Streatham to improve the public realm and travel through the area, especially for people walking, cycling or relying on buses.
“I also welcome Transport for London ’s efforts to minimise the impact on the area during the construction of this major scheme. We will continue to work with TfL to ensure local people are kept fully up to date as this project progresses.”
Julie Lewington, TfL’s Head of Programme Delivery said: “Our plans to transform A23 Streatham Hill for everyone who lives and works in and visits the area will make it easier and safer for people to travel and enable more people to walk and cycle.
“We’re working to minimise the impact of construction work on local residents and people travelling through the area and would like to thank everyone for their patience during this vital project. We’re sorry for any disruption caused by the work and would encourage everyone to plan ahead using our comprehensive travel advice.”
