A woman’s best friend has been left fuming at her when she was open and honest about the true meaning of the name she had given to her bundle of joy – and it wasn’t good
A mum has said her best friend is furious with her after she told her friend that her choice of baby name had a rude meaning in her language.
The mum whose first language is Portuguese, said her friend Becca and her husband enjoyed giving their children “unique” names and had managed to “invent” a name for their daughter.
Taking to Reddit, the mum shared that her best friend has been struggling to find a name for her new baby and was excited once she had found one. The name they settled on was Narina, which in Portuguese means “nostril”.
After Becca revealed the name, the mum’s four-year-old son burst into giggles and being curious Becca wanted to know why. The mum told her the meaning of the name in Portuguese and realised Becca had become “really sad” after being told the revelation.
After the mum got home, she said that Becca’s husband called her and was “furious” at her for “ruining” the baby’s name. Becca and her husband had fought because she no longer wanted to use the name and wanted to pick a different one, now knowing the meaning.
She said: “He argued they’d ‘never visit Brazil anyway’, so they shouldn’t have to change the name, but Becca refused to use Narina. My husband agrees that their fight is not my fault, but thinks I didn’t need to tell Becca anything since Americans are unlikely to know what Narina means.”
The mum suggested another name “Marina” but the couple were not impressed. They said they only liked to use names they had made up themselves, by mixing syllables.
Reddit users flooded the post’s replies section with their thoughts, with many people shocked at the name suggestion. One person said: “I’m shocked they didn’t bother googling their name ideas as they came up with them, I see Narina as nostril on the first page of search results.”
A second person who said it’s impossible not to laugh commented: “As a fellow Brazilian, I’m impressed you were able to control yourself when she told you. I would’ve probably left a little giggle escape, I mean, can you imagine a little nostril running around?”
A third person said: “There are a lot of names that sound nice in one language but mean something rude in another language. Benjamin is a perfectly respectable name in English, but in Japan ‘Ben’ is slang for “sh**.”
