A woman has alleged she was slammed at a job interview as the manager who met with her deemed her outfit “inappropriate”. The anonymous woman shared a video of her outfit on TikTok, and the situation has left people a little torn, as some think the outfit is fine, while others have a few issues with it.

Since the video was shared it’s gone viral, as the conversation topic has caught so many people’s attention. Over a video of herself wearing the outfit, the woman, known as heylady_12 on social media, wrote: “Manager who interviewed me said ‘you dressed up inappropriately for [the] job interview’. What’s wrong with my clothes?”

The clip has since been viewed over 90,000 times, and people were quick to chime in with their opinions. On the topic of fashion, it seems people think there are rules you should follow when it comes to being professional at work.

In the video, the woman is seen simply wearing black trousers and a neutral roundneck top. She dons a smart casual look, but some people wondered whether she should have dressed a little more “smartly” for an interview.

One suggested: “Hmm, that’s ok for the office when you get hired. Interview outfits usually are formal.” Another wrote: “What’s the job you were interviewing for? Like, if it was for a high level position, I think it’s a bit downplayed, but for a regular position – it’s perfect.”

A third replied: “Depends what type of job. I’d wear this to work, but never to an interview. It is way too casual for an interview in corporate.”

To this, someone else responded: “Yeah, but what’s inappropriate about it? It’s not like she’s wearing a mini skirt and a tube top.”

Another thought the outfit was great, writing: “It’s work appropriate. Nice shape and structure, modest, natural tones, not overly dressy. I see no issues.”

One more also chimed in with: “These comments are funny. She’s wearing slacks and a sweater. It’s clean and professional. A blazer doesn’t land you a job, your interview does.

“And, if a person is getting a job solely because they wore a blazer, there is a bigger problem here.”

Someone else wrote: “I don’t think it’s ‘inappropriate’, just a little casual. A buttoned blouse with a blazer would have probably been better, but in my opinion there’s nothing wrong here. You dodged a bullet.”

Others also claimed it was a “perfect” interview outfit, and couldn’t understand what the problem was. Many also seemed to think there’s a difference between deeming something as “inappropriate” and simply “too casual.”

In a follow up video, the woman revealed she was being interviewed for a teller position at a bank branch. She disclosed the going wage was around $20.00 (£14.88) an hour.

When it comes to what’s considered “inappropriate attire” to wear to a job interview, outfits tend to include overly casual clothing, revealing attire and items that are distracting or offensive. Examples include athletic wear, ripped jeans, t-shirts with inappropriate slogans and excessive accessories.

Generally, people are advised to aim for professional attire appropriate to the job and company culture.
