Everyone feels the green-eyed monster rear its head every now and again, but Debbi Wood takes things to the next level with her insistence that her other half take a lie detector test whenever he goes out
Feeling a twinge of jealousy every now and then is a normal part of the human experience, and many people start to notice the green-eyed monster rear its head when it comes to their romantic relationships from time to time.
However, most people are well aware that these are feelings that need to be kept strictly under control, and try not to lean into their jealous tendencies – understanding that without trust, the foundations of their relationships won’t be strong enough to go the distance.
For Debbi Wood, however, getting these jealous instincts under control was no mean feat, and she was dubbed the ‘world’s most jealous woman’ when she appeared on This Morning back in 2013, explaining that she had strict rules for her husband, including taking a lie detector test every time he came home.
It all started from a comment her husband Steve made in jest, when he said he would be willing to take one of these tests to prove he isn’t up to no good when he goes out.
However, Debbi jumped at the chance, she explained on This Morning, and bought a kit – adding that the couple lived far apart when they first got together, which added to her anxiety that Steve might stray.
She also explained that her doubts in her other half were compounded after Steve saw someone else as they were getting together. He claimed that they hadn’t established that they were exclusively boyfriend and girlfriend at that time, but Debbi said she became “resentful” over this “slight deception”.
Debbi’s jealousy got so out of control, she even used to check Steve’s bank statements and phone records.
“Well, when you’ve got a good man, you’re not going to let him go, are you?” Debbi said about her controlling behaviour.
She also forbade Steve from watching TV programs that had women in, after an advert for a women’s razor came on the screen once, and she became fixated on the idea he was attracted to the model used.
“One night, an advert for a women’s razor came on television and I felt panicky thinking that Steve was eyeing the model up. The only thing that could put my mind at rest was banning him from watching any programmes that have women in them,” Debbi told MailOnline.
After their appearance on This Morning, the couple took some time to work on their relationship, and a year later when they came back on the show, they both said there had been some real improvements.
Instead of regular lie detector tests, they had become a thing that happened “once in a blue moon” – and Steve said their relationship was “absolutely mazing” when Debbi was able to get past her jealousy, which she claimed was caused by a previous “traumatic” relationship.
“When we’re not arguing about this, our relationship is absolutely amazing. I make her laugh in ways she’s never laughed before. She makes me laugh in ways I’ve never laughed before,” Steve said about their marriage.
