King Charles and Queen Camilla depart Easter service at Windsor Castle

King Charles was overheard making a joke about his wife Queen Camilla while on a walkabout on Easter Sunday.

The monarch, who was diagnosed with cancer in January, attended the service at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle with the Queen in what was his most significant public appearance since his diagnosis. Charles, 75, shook hands and spoke with those who had gathered at the castle in a surprise walkabout following the service, and told them: “You’re very brave to stand out here in the cold.”

As he turned to leave one part of the crowd where he had been greeting wellwishers a woman holding a flat said: “Your Majesty, Camilla is 17 now, my King Charle’s Spaniel.” The King, who was on the walkabout with Camilla, then turned to the woman in the crowd and joked: “I would get a new one as well.”

The comment came as he Charles greeted the crowds outside St George’s Chapel on Sunday where several members of the public commented on how well the King appeared. Henry Wood, 20, a private wine merchant from Basingstoke, Hampshire, also attended the service inside St George’s Chapel with his family said Charles looked “good”.

“It was a very nice Easter service, very enjoyable. It was nice to see the King in good spirits and the whole family in good spirits, as if nothing was wrong. Obviously it being his first appearance in quite some time, I think people wanted to see him for that reason. He looked good today and in high spirits, and from what I’ve heard he’s doing good so it’s refreshing to hear.”

Mr Wood said the service itself was “wholesome” and praised the “exceptional” choir. Speaking about the rendition of the national anthem, he added: “It was a proud moment, I think. It was the first time I’ve got to sing it in the room with the King.” Kate, the Prince of Wales and their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, were absent from the Easter service as the family are spending the holiday together as they adjust to her diagnosis.
