Nearly 3,000 Instagram users were struggling to access the social media site at the worst point of the outage, statistics on a detecting website shows

Thousands of Instagram users were tonight reporting issues with the app.

Approximately 2,800 users were struggling to access the Instagram app at around 8.15pm UK time. Fans of the site took to other social media sites to express their anger. About 52 per cent of reported problems were associated with the app as 31 per cent couldn’t login at 8.15pm.

“Why can’t I include comments/captions on my Instagram posts? They disappear once posted. Anyone else have this issue????” one user asked on X, formerly Twitter. Another replied: “I think IG is down rn. I can’t comment either.”

Most of the complaints have been reported in the US, it is understood. The Mirror has contacted Meta, which operates Instagram, for comment as Threads, Instagram’s sister social media app, also experienced outages by around 8.30pm.

Many Instagram users are met with a pop-up message that reads, “Try Again Later. We restrict certain activity to protect our community. Let us know if you think we made a mistake.” The message appeared when users attempted to leave comments on other accounts’ posts.

But the number of reports fell by around 9.45pm UK time, approximately 90 minutes after the peak of the disruption. Downdetector, which tracks issues with large apps and websites, reported at around 10pm tonight that 500 or so users were affected.

When Instagram and Facebook were down in the US, UK, and parts of Europe and Asia, on Wednesday March 20, other social media went into furore. More than 1,000 people have reported issues including with sending and receiving messages on Messenger. While some users have said they can send messages, recipients are not able to reply – and some people said they are being shown as “unavailable to friends”.

Some also complained they cannot see stories or conduct searches on both apps. Others reported problems in the comments section and the news feed of Instagram. DownDetector noted a spike in reports related to Instagram and Facebook on that occasion. During the outage, many headed to X, formerly called Twitter, to complain.
