Ryanair has strict rules in place when it comes to checked-in luggage – and one mistake around bags could see travellers being denied boarding altogether or charged more

Ryanair has a strict rule about checked-in bags that could mean passengers are not allowed to board their flight. Most people who have flown with Ryanair will know about its tight rules on hand luggage.

But the airline also has firm rules for checked-in luggage – and one mistake could mean you’re not allowed to get on your flight.

When you book a flight with Ryanair, you can bring a small personal bag for free, but it must fit under the seat in front of you and be no bigger than 40 x 20 x 25cm, like this £11.99 holdall from Amazon. You can pay extra to bring a larger 10kg cabin bag up to 55 x 50 x 20cm, like the half-price Prestwick Cabin Bag from luxury suitcase brand Antler, which is now £85.

You can also pay more to check-in baggage, which is a popular choice for people going on longer holidays, but Ryanair has clear rules for bringing larger suitcases on board. Checked-in bags on Ryanair flights can weigh no more than 10kg or 20kg, depending on the baggage you’ve booked, and must be dropped off at the airport check-in desks before security.

The 20kg bag should be no larger than 80 x 120 x 120 cm, as per Birmingham Live.

According to Ryanair’s bag policy, anyone who turns up to the boarding gate with their checked-in bag will have to pay an extra charge. The airline’s excess baggage fee is up to £11 per extra kilo of luggage.

If you don’t follow Ryanair’s rules, you might not be able to get on your flight. Their policy says: “If you have purchased a check-in bag, you must check this in at the bag drop desk at the airport.”

“If you bring your check-in bags to the boarding gate, you will have to pay a fee per bag, to place them in the aircraft hold. If you do not pay the gate bag fee you will not be able to board your flight.”

Ryanair can also ask for more money if you forget to check in online, need to change someone’s name on your ticket, or get to the airport too late. Checking in online with Ryanair is free, but if you do it at the airport on the day you fly, it costs £55.

If you need to change your flight details online, it’s £45 for each person for each way. To change a name online, you have to pay £115.

And if you’re late to the airport and miss your flight, you’ll have to pay £100 for each person.

Are you thinking about where to go on your next holiday?
