The hilarious joke appeared to backfire for German grocery store Aldi as they teased shoppers with a new ice-cream flavour – but it made shoppers want to buy it

Aldi may have gone a little too far with their April Fool’s gag as shoppers are now demanding the “joke” product becomes real.

Staff at Aldi Scotland probably weren’t expecting their prank to backfire when they hilariously teased a “new” ice cream flavour in their local stores, as they imitated a big brand.

However, the joke saw shoppers begging the budget supermarket to put the product on the shelves so they can actually buy it.

The ice cream, which was teased on social media, resembled the easily recognisable Häagen-Dazs brand, and with a clever play on words, shoppers were told they could soon pick up the Specially Selected “Häggis-Dazs” ice cream.

Aldi Scotland posted on their Instagram: “Fancy trying something different for dessert? Our new Scottish Haggis Ice Cream is absolutely banging! Made with local Scottish Double Cream and Specially Selected Chieftain Haggis, it’s sure tae put a wee pep(per) in yer step!”

Despite people not falling for the April Fool’s Day prank, it saw Aldi fans calling for it to become a reality. Costing £2.99, the fake product seemed to be a hit with Scottish shoppers.

“Nevermind April fool.. make it happen,” one Instagram user penned, while another added: “This should actually be a product so we can deep fry it.”

“Haggis we’re on board with this!…” And another begged: “Send samples!” While many others loved the cheeky prank.

To make it even more believable, Aldi staff hit the streets, offering people a taste of the unique flavour. They posted a clip of people trying it to Instagram and said: “We took to the streets wae oor new Haggis Flavoured Ice Cream to hear your thoughts… Is it an aye or naw from you?”

It had a mixed reaction, as some people said it was “really nice”, whereas others weren’t convinced about the flavour, and one person simply called it “odd”.

Aldi even got food content creator Mel Fraser on board. They asked her to “review” the product in an “ad” beforehand, then she became the person to finally reveal the hilarious prank.

As Mel read out the ingredients, she revealed that, as well as all the usual components of an ice cream, this concoction contained haggis, egg yolk, mashed potato and beef gravy.

She posted: “APRIL FOOL’S. Sorry to disappoint everyone who wanted to try the @aldiscotland haggis ice cream.”
