Many people love making a trip to the beach during the summer, with water sports and activities an appeal to many but one man made a painful mistake when he decided to give surfing a go
A man went surfing but made one vital error and it saw him return home looking rather different – and in quite a bit of pain. Making the most of the summer with visits to the beach can be an important goal for many people, but it’s important to be mindful of the consequences associated with sun exposure.
One man was left with an alarmingly red patch of sunburn spanning across the centre of his back after he had nobody around to help him to apply sunscreen. His exposed skin was burned by the sun’s rays, leaving his skin looking red and angry.
The rest of his skin, where he’d been able to successfully apply sunscreen himself, wasn’t injured.
The NHS warns there’s “no safe or healthy way to get a tan” and adds “people who spend a lot of time in the sun, whether it’s for work or play, are at increased risk of skin cancer if they do not take the right precautions”.
It’s important to use at least factor 30 sunscreen, never let your skin burn, and spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm, when the sun is at its strongest and most intense.
The NHS states: “Sunburn increases your risk of skin cancer. Sunburn does not just happen on holiday. You can burn in the UK, even when it’s cloudy.
“There’s no safe or healthy way to get a tan. A tan does not protect your skin from the sun’s harmful effects.
“Aim to strike a balance between protecting yourself from the sun and getting enough vitamin D from sunlight.”
Blake Anderson suffered the consequences of not properly protecting his skin when he went surfing but left a large patch of his back uncovered.
Sharing the results in a lighthearted TikTok video, he captioned footage of his sunburnt back: “Went surfing and had no one to put sun block on my back.”
In the clip, a woman off screen can be heard asking him: “Demonstrate how you put on the sunscreen.”
Blake then shows himself reaching his shoulders and upper back to successfully apply the protective lotion, but being unable to reach the burnt part.
The video struck a chord with fellow TikTok users who were eager to share their thoughts in the comments section.
One person said: “He’s telling the truth.”
Another noted how Blake’s demonstration “perfectly lined up.”
A third person said: “Proof that sunscreen, when properly applied, is effective.”
Someone else commented: “Someone needs to invent a sunscreen applicator that we can get on our own backs.”
Another person joked: “Girl, he cannot survive without you.” And another said: “Best sunscreen ad ever.”
The official Pinterest account quipped: “Never deleting this app” while the actual YouTube account added: “at least he’s honest”.
