UK discount retailer Poundland has revealed that 52 additional outlets will shut their doors permanently. The company already permanently closed 10 locations yesterday (August 10), with 15 shops shutting on August 17, and 12 more on August 24.

Further closures are planned for later this month and into September, three of which are in London.

This forms part of a restructuring strategy that the firm launched in June following its sale to investment company Gordon Brothers for £1. An additional 150 shops face potential closure, with Poundland anticipating a reduction of its estate to approximately 700 outlets, reports the Express.

The new owners have suggested eliminating frozen food lines, cutting back on chilled products, shutting distribution hubs, ceasing online sales, and expanding women’s clothing and seasonal merchandise.

This week, the retailer made a significant announcement for shoppers, stocking hundreds of products priced at merely 10p. The promotion features substantial reductions across various categories including personal care items, toys, and seasonal goods.

Darren MacDonald, retail director, commented: “It is, of course, sincerely regrettable that our recovery plans include any store closures, but sadly that’s necessary if we’re to achieve our goal of securing the future of thousands of jobs and hundreds of stores. While our anticipated network of around 650-700 stores remains a sizeable one, we entirely understand how disappointing it will be for customers when one nearby, closes. Nevertheless, we look forward to continuing to welcome them to a nearby Poundland.”

He added: “It goes without saying that we will work closely with colleagues through a formal consultation process in stores scheduled to close, exploring any suitable alternative roles. That work is underway.”

Poundland’s CEO Barry Williams commented on the situation, stating: “Although recent trading has been challenging, we have built a turnaround plan with a simplified and more focused Poundland at its heart, as we aim to deliver the amazing value our customers expect.”
