This special rare 50p coin has around 200,000 out there in circulation – and owning one could be great for your pockets! In fact, it might even sell for “serious” money
There are so many ways to check if your rare coin is worth a lot of money. From its rarity to condition, we’ve seen a lot of these pieces turn heads among collectors, including the penny coin which is the “rarest in UK history”.
Now it’s time to pay attention to a 50p coin which has everyone talking – and it’s not the infamous Kew Gardens piece. According to the @CoinCollectingWizard, who boasts 30,200 followers on Instagram, it’s the Atlantic Salmon 50p which is certainly worth looking out for. With just 200,000 out there in circulation, it can be “super rare” to find – but definitely possible.
He said in a recent video: “I found a rare coin in my change and sold it for serious money.
“There are so many different 50p designs you can find in your change, but this one is worth £80 known as the Atlantic Salmon 50p from 2023.
“This coin is at the top of any coin collector’s wish list and is super rare to find.”

Discussing the Atlantic Salmon, he said it features a salmon jumping out of the water and “is the new UK definitive design for all 50p coins moving forward”.
He added: “You need to make sure the one to find is the 2023 version with no privy mark which is easy as it is recently the only one in the UK change at the moment.
“There is only 200,000 out there that you can find too which sounds like a lot but it really isn’t and is becoming increasingly harder to find.”
And this coin is so special it’s even overtaken the Kew Gardens as the rarest 50p in UK circulation, a piece which has held the top spot for a very long time.
The Atlantic Salmon 50p coin features an image of King Charles III and the salmon on the other side.
There’s a number of ways to identify a rare 50p coin in your change.
First, check the mintage figures, design and condition. It’s worth remembering low mintage coins, especially those unique like the Kew Gardens 50p, or ones with minting errors, are likely to be more valuable.
